ESSS and AfAS Forge New Partnership to Advance African Space Science

ADDIS ABABA - In a significant move to strengthen scientific collaboration across the continent, the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) and the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 21st, 2026. The agreement aims to synergize ESSS’s deep national footprint with AfAS’s pan-African network to promote astronomy, technology, and space science.

During the signing ceremony, ESSS Managing Director Mr. Kirubel Menberu detailed the society’s extensive regional contributions. He highlighted ongoing efforts in public outreach, infrastructure development, and digital inclusion, citing flagship initiatives such as the HEWA+ project.

Mr. Menberu also emphasized the society's foundational legacy in Ethiopia's space sector. He noted that ESSS built the Entoto Observatory and Research Center (EORC), a facility that laid the groundwork for the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) and has since evolved into the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI).

A Vision for Pan-African Collaboration

Strategic discussions at the event centered on how the two organizations can actively share resources and expertise. Prof. Amare Abebe, President of AfAS, commended the vast and impactful work ESSS has accomplished within Ethiopia. He expressed strong enthusiasm for the partnership, affirming AfAS’s commitment to expanding collaborative efforts across borders.

The society's scale and achievements also drew regional admiration. Dr. Takalani Nemaungani, Chief Director for Astronomy at South Africa's Department of Science and Innovation, addressed the attendees during the event. Dr. Nemaungani remarked that after observing numerous scientific societies across the continent, he was exceptionally surprised and impressed by the sheer size and active engagement of ESSS.
