Inclusivity
ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), in collaboration with the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), has successfully concluded the 3rd edition of the 2025 Teacher Training Programme. Funded by the International Astronomical Union Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE), this year’s initiative marked a significant step forward in making space science accessible to all students, regardless of physical ability.

The training was officially opened by Dr. Yeshurun, Deputy Director General of SSGI, and Mr. Kirubel Menberu, Managing Director of ESSS, both of whom highlighted the critical need for modernizing science education in Ethiopia.
This year’s curriculum was delivered by a distinguished international team of experts, including Dr. Rubén García Benito and Dr. Enrique Pérez Montero, alongside Prof. Mirjana Pović from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC, Spain). They were joined by Mr. Nebiyu Suleyman (IAU-OAE NAEC) and Mr. Kirubel Menberu.
Pioneering Inclusive Education The standout feature of the 2025 edition was the introduction of cutting-edge teaching methodologies designed for inclusivity. The sessions highlighted the CosMonic: Sonification Project, which translates astronomical data into sound, and the Astroaccesible initiative, which focuses on inclusive outreach strategies. These tools are specifically designed to ensure that students with visual and hearing impairments have equal opportunities to explore the universe.

Hands-on and Tactile Learning Moving beyond theory, participants engaged in rigorous hands-on experiments adapted from the Network for Astronomy School Education (NASE).
To facilitate tactile learning, the program partnered with Enzirt Engineering and SSGI-ESKC to provide 3D-printed models of the Sun, the night sky, and various constellations. These physical models allowed teachers to demonstrate complex astronomical concepts through touch, a vital resource for visually impaired students.
Through this initiative, ESSS and its partners have reaffirmed their commitment to breaking down barriers in STEM education. By equipping educators with these adaptive tools and skills, the program ensures that the wonders of the cosmos are open to every Ethiopian student.
About ESSS The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting space science and technology in Ethiopia through advocacy, education, and outreach.
