The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), in collaboration with the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), successfully held its 21st General Assembly today, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the nation's space and geospatial sector.
ADDIS ABABA — The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), in collaboration with the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), successfully held its 21st General Assembly today, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the nation's space and geospatial sector.
The high-level assembly was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, Patron of ESSS, setting a collaborative and forward-looking tone for the gathering of scientists, policymakers, and space enthusiasts.
The morning session commenced with a welcoming address by Mr. Kirubel Menberu, Managing Director of the ESSS. This was followed by keynote speeches delivered by Dr. Yeshurun Alemayehu, Deputy Director General of the SSGI, and Mrs. Mesenbet Shenkute, the outgoing Chairperson of the ESSS Board of Directors (BOD).
Following the opening remarks, Mrs. Mesenbet presented the society’s comprehensive annual report, which was accompanied by a detailed financial report. Participants then engaged in productive discussions regarding the current situation and future trajectory of the local space ecosystem.
A central focus of the assembly was the transition of leadership. The General Assembly acknowledged the conclusion of the tenures of Board Chairperson Mrs. Mesenbet Shenkute and board member Dr. Tulu Besha, thanking them for their dedicated service. Following a nomination process, Mrs. Beza Tesfaye and Dr. Libsework Negash were officially elected to the Board of Directors.
The society also announced its newly appointed board leadership, selecting Dr. Arega Yirdaw as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors and Mrs. Beza Tesfaye as Vice-Chairperson. Additionally, Dr. Alemiye Mamo was announced as the Chair of the Diaspora Wing Committee.
During the afternoon session, the focus shifted to regional achievements and youth engagement. Dr. Tesfaye presented a branch performance report on behalf of the ESSS Haramaya Branch. The society also celebrated the next generation of space advocates by presenting the Youth Space Ambassador (YSA) awards to this year's outstanding winners. The day concluded with a formal recognition ceremony honoring the outgoing board chair and members for their extensive contributions to the society's mission.
The 21st General Assembly is scheduled to continue tomorrow at the Addis Ababa University College of Technology and Built Environment, where participants will take part in dedicated scientific and youth sessions.
